Seaman Preparation Checklist
1. Basic Documents
Passport (valid and updated)
Seaman Book / Seafarer’s Identification and Record Book (SIRB)
National Identity Card (KTP) (for Indonesians)
2. Mandatory Training & Certificates (STCW)
According to STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping):
BST (Basic Safety Training)
SAT / AFF (Advanced Fire Fighting) (for higher ranks)
PSCRB (Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats)
MEFA (Medical First Aid)
SSO (Ship Security Officer) (if applicable)
Crowd Management (for cruise ships)
3. Medical Check-Up
Seafarer’s Medical Examination
Issued by an authorized maritime clinic
Must be fit for sea service
4. English Proficiency
Able to understand and communicate in Maritime English
Know basic commands and communication on board
Sometimes required to pass the Marlins Test or similar
5. Valid Contracts and Endorsements
Employment Contract from a legal Crew Manning Agency
Flag State Endorsements (depends on the ship’s flag)
Visa (like Schengen, US C1/D) depending on your destination
6. Personal Preparation
Mental and physical readiness for long contracts (6–9 months)
Learn shipboard discipline, ranks, safety, and teamwork
Pack proper personal belongings and safety gear if needed
